The word “windswept” might imply being blown by the wind, either flowing freely and relaxed or being thrown violently through gusts and bursts. In this march, the contrast between the interpretations is explored; the traditionally militaristic, bombastic, raucous character of a march while being contrasted by several free and relaxed, yet bittersweet melodies.
Premiere performance by the USC Thornton Clarinet Choir on April 25th, 2025.

Instrumentation
1 – E♭ Clarinet or Solo B♭ Clarinet
2 – B♭ Clarinet 1
2 – B♭ Clarinet 2
2 – B♭ Clarinet 3
1 – E♭ Alto Clarinet 1
1 – E♭ Alto Clarinet 2 *
1 – B♭ Bass Clarinet 1
1 – B♭ Bass Clarinet 2
1 – E♭ Contra-alto Clarinet * **
2 – B♭ Contrabass Clarinet
Optional Parts:
1 – F Basset Horn (doubles E♭ Alto Clarinet 2) *
1 – B♭ Bass Clarinet 3 (doubles E♭ Contra-alto Clarinet) * **
1 – B♭ Bass Clarinet 4 (doubles E♭ Alto Clarinet 2) *
The number of players listed is the suggested ensemble size for optimal balance. One on a part would also be possible. If doubling is desired, it should be assigned carefully as to not overbalance the upper end (B♭ Cls.) of the ensemble and to maintain a strong middle and lower end.
*Either one or both of the parts may be used, such as using both 2nd E♭ Alto Clarinet and F Basset Horn parts or only using the F Basset Horn part.
** While technically not optional, a satisfactory performance of this piece can still be achieved without using E♭ Contra-alto Clarinet (or B♭ Bass Clarinet 3). However, it is still highly recommended to use both Contras whenever possible as they have unique parts from each other.
